Applications are now open for schools to enter the Department for Education Character Awards 2015 to be recognised as a leader in character education.

The Awards were first announced in December as part of the £5 million Character Innovation Fund to support the development of character in schools.

You need to act quickly – there is a short application window.

Who can apply?

All primary and secondary schools can apply. This includes academies, free schools, special schools and PRUs. Private sector and non-profit organisations can also apply, as well as local authorities.

What is it about?

You are asked to demonstrate outstanding practice of character education in the 2013 to 2014 academic year. Core achievements should have taken place during this period.

They are looking for work that develops character traits, attributes and behaviours that underpin success in school and work, including:

  • perseverance, resilience and grit
  • confidence and optimism
  • motivation, drive and ambition
  • neighbourliness and community spirit
  • tolerance and respect
  • honesty, integrity and dignity
  • conscientiousness, curiosity and focus.

There is an online application form to complete, which can be accessed via a link on the DfE webpage.

The deadline for entries is soon – please apply by 30th January 2015.

What are the prizes?

Regional winners will receive £15,000.

All regional winners will be invited to a national awards ceremony and a national winner will be announced.
