Tesco’s Bags of Help programme is back and looking for local projects to support. It uses the money raised from the 5p carrier bag charge in England to donate to good causes. The charity Groundwork will be helping to review the applications and administer the funding.

Tesco customers vote each month for their favourite community project.

Who can apply?

Schools are welcome to apply, along with these other organisations:

  • Voluntary and community organisations
  • Registered charities
  • Health bodies
  • Parish and town councils
  • Social enterprises
  • Community interest companies
  • Hospices
  • Community councils
  • Local authorities
  • Housing organisations.

What can be funded?

Projects that provide community benefit will be funded. The idea is that these projects will be free for the community to access and use. A wide range of projects are considered for support, including projects that make improvements to community buildings and outdoor spaces, purchase of new equipment, train of coaches and volunteers and host community events.

What funding is available?

Winning projects will be voted by customers at local Tesco stores. Grants of up to £4,000 are available.

Bags of Help can fund 100% of your project costs so you do not have to have any match funding. However, if you secured additional funding, there is no limit to what this amount can be and any funding awarded by Bags of Help can form part of your wider project costs.

Projects can be stand-alone projects or discrete, self-contained parts of a larger scheme or phased projects.

Projects need to be completed within twelve months of receipt of the grant.

How do I apply?

To apply for a grant, you’ll need to find your nearest Tesco store. There is a store locator on the Tesco website. Next, you’ll need to enter this postcode into the Eligibility Quiz. If you’re eligible, you’ll be given access to the application form.

If your project involves work on the land, you’ll need to submit a completed and signed landowner permission form with your application.

Applications can be made at any time.

Please see the Groundwork website for more details on applying for a grant from Bags of Help. Please also check this website for any updates to the opportunity.
